How To Prepare For A Disaster - Use Social Media Tools!
Earthquakes. tsunamis, power outages, trees falling on houses, there is no shortage of disasters that seem to be occurring at an ever increasing rate in our world. When these happen, it leaves us feeling helpless and overwhelmed. And when you have a family, the anxiety also sets in. And with the plethora of media and information we all have in our lives, from Twitter and Facebook to iParentnetwork, the steady stream of information keeps us aware of ...
Twitter in the classroom? Good or bad - what do you think?
I've taken part in live conversations via twitter and have benefitted from it. I've used Twitter as a real time search tool and I've used it to search for news. I also use it to laugh at the ridiculousness of life....found incredibly interesting information that others have shared and in general have had mostly positive interactions with Twitter -- none of which have to do with knowing what someone is eating for breakfast (the typical ...

143 4E&E
What the heck does THAT mean? Ok, so you run across a text that you don't understand, or you walk by your kid's computer when they are chatting with their friend and you see the following:
BTWITIAILWU
Any clue what they are saying? That's exactly the idea! Partly because the internet has created a way for kids to have a secret life from their parents and partly driven by social networking sites like ...
Old School: Perfection as the Goal. New School: Imperfection as the Goal
Our society is rooted in the concept of perfection. It used to be that when you designed a product, you had one shot to make it perfect because it was generally produced in a factory by the millions and if you created something that was less than perfect, it would be financially disastrous if it failed in the marketplace.
That was always the ultimate goal for everything. Perfection.
Well, the world has changed.
Now imperfection ...
Digital Nation
Did anyone watch the Frontline episode called Digital Nation? If not, you should check it out online. It's quite enlightening and shows how wired our kids really are. Certainly not all kids, but a good majority of them. It is changing everything, from the way they are taught in high school and college to interactions in the workplace in the future. Even their hearing is being altered from being wired all ...
Time wasters - all of them!
Facebook. Twitter, MySpace, Cell phones, Blogs, iParentnetwork....
Time wasters. Time thieves. At least that is how the media has sometimes portrayed them. Not real. Online friends? Get serious. That's not really human contact. Those are trivial connections that take up time that we could be spent with our real friends, right? Those using social media, such as iParentnetwork, are the lonely folks, the isolated. Social media must adds to that sense of isolation.
Nope.

Even for the little ones: There's probably an app for that
Everyone today is running around and with little ones, even the simplest chores become challenging when you also have to make sure your preschooler or toddler is entertained and safe while you pay bills, make a meal, or even take a phone call. It's even more challenging when you have to wait in line at the grocery store or, now that it's the holidays, to buy a gift at the store.
I remember one December ...
This should be the online mantra for our kids
The FCC recently published guidelines for social networking safety for tweens and teens. There are some really good tips in here that every parent should read. We all know that we have to teach our kids to look both ways before crossing the street. That's a no-brainer. What is less clear is how to guide them through this new terrain - the world of social networking.
The first concept you must get across to ...
If You Think Sexting Is Fun
The following is an article that I came across on a blog in the Hartford Courant. It reports the second known "sexting" related suicide to take place in the country.
This is a dangerous practice that is engaged in by naive teens, and the consequences can be significant and far-reaching. I know of at least one local student who was involved in a similar incident and ultimately withdrew from school. Parents need to know about ...

Parents May Be Saying OMG
You may be saying OMG and watching your teens ROFLOL (rolling on the floor laughing out loud) once you read this little ditty. One of my personal concerns over the years as I have watched my own teens embrace instant messaging and texting, is how quickly they throw spelling out the door. I have one great speller and one terrible one, so it has always worried me that the one who struggles already with spelling ...
How to make this site really useful to you
I've made an observation....we have almost 300 parents who have signed up as members of iParentnetwork. That's really great for a new web site. When I review the analytics of the site, they also look really good. People are coming to the site over and over again....not just once. And they are spending a decent amount of time on the site -- well over 5 minutes and are reviewing over 8 pages on each visit. ...
Mashups, Remixes, Downloading and Copyright infringement
There has been a ton of debate in recent years about the music industry. People have downloaded millions of songs illegally and are doing so with the fear that a lawyer will knock on his/her door with a lawsuit. And that fear is not unfounded. As recently as a couple of years ago, a dozen UConn students were caught up in a sting and sued for downloading music.
Parents everywhere began questioning their own ...
What exactly is an AVATAR???
A question came in using our anonymous question tool asking me to explain what an avatar was and why it is really important that people use them, rather than defaulting to the one provided by the web site.
An avatar is a photograph of yourself or something to represent yourself (like a photo of your dog or if you are in to horses, maybe a horse) -- in short, something unique.
The way the site ...
Advice for parents of younger kids
This is a great video for parents of younger kids. It's a video put out by yahoo that profiles a conversation between three moms along the subject of "what I'd tell parents of younger kids....or I wish I had know this when my kids were young! I highly recommend watching this short video.
Not all parental monitoring software is alike
Wow. It seems as if not all parental monitoring software is alike. Two of the leading brands -- brands rated as tops by trusted source C-net - have been found to be mining kids chats and posts for information so they can tailor their marketing better.
Personally, I'm in favor of open dns as a way to safely monitor our kid's activities online. It not only gives you flexibility in monitoring your kids ...
I'm Just Sayin'....
It seems that our kids move more and more quickly from one slang phrase to another. It's hard to keep up. Between the instant message "speak" to inventive spellings used in text messages, it's hard to even understand them anymore. Am I right?
Well, I'm here to help. I have just learned that UCLA has published it's latest dictionary of slang called the UCLA Slang 6. You can order it from them directly (sorry it's ...
How to decipher an instant message or a text message
I know that it might seem like our kids have developed a new language when you see what they are texting or typing in to an instant message (IM) window. But have no fear, I'm about to arm you with a way to learn that new language. Check this out. You may want to print it out and keep it handy. Oh, and don't tell your kids you're on to them.
Welcome to iParentnetwork!
Welcome to the brand new iParentnetwork! We hope that you will use this site to find information, help, and support and to be that help, information and support to other parents.
Our vision was to create a virtual town square of sorts to enable parents to connect with each other to talk about parenting -- anything about parenting. This is a tough job and over time, we have each figured out techniques that work ...
In Defense of Technology
There has been a lot of news lately about all the negative effects of technology as it relates to our kids.
I have a confession.
I love technology. It allows me to work anytime I want without regard to time or space. It allows me the ability to know where my kids are and to begin to give them a little freedom to roam and, frankly, in the case of my son, it has allowed ...
A Beginners' Guide To Social Networking
Social Networking is either a buzz word or a way of life -- depending on your age and demographic. If I can put it broadly, if you are under 30, social networking is a bit like breathing. You do it without thinking about it -- and if you don't, it is simply because it is isn't useful to you right now.
If you you are over 40, social networking can sound either cool, scary, or ...
Parents Busted on Facebook for Hosting Teen Drinking Party
Today's Hartord Courant reported from Glastonbury on how an "Charges filed In Facebook Underage Drinking Photos."
In part, the paper reported:
"Parents who hosted a birthday party for their 18-year-old daughter have been cited by police after pictures of teens playing beer pong and drinking alcohol surfaced on Facebook, police said."

Parenting In A Connected World
Parents tell me they are so overwhelmed because kids seem to understand technology better than most adults do. Because they are so connected to each other today, it has become very difficult to effectively parent our kids. After all, when was the last time one of your kid's friends actually called your house to talk to your son or daughter and you got to answer the phone and actually hear who was calling? Most kids today have cell phones, email accounts, Facebook or My Space pages and a slew of other ways of connecting to one another in ways that basically shut parents out of the loop. Am I right? It's time we mount a challenge to that by getting smarter about how all this technology works! B As Cnnctd As Ur Kids R! I'll try to help you understand the power of what has become known as Web 2.0 and how to embrace it. It's not going away.
