Teens reveal risky behaviors on social networking sites

http://tinyurl.com/oto8pl
This is a must read article for all parents. This week's US News and World Report has a whole section devoted to "What Parents Don't Know about How Their Kids Are Using Facebook and MySpace". What I found interesting here is that when a doctor sent the teens an email saying that he/she noticed that they were engaging in risky behavior, the teens deleted the postings and were less likely to post in the future. Maybe this is the answer!

Strict Rules From Parents Lead to Safer Driving by Teens

http://tinyurl.com/yadsh5m
Two studies coming out in the journal Pediatrics Monday show that parents have a big impact on the safety of teen drivers.

Parents who are actively involved in setting rules and boundaries, and following up on those rules, lead to safer drivers. Teens who say their parents are actively involved cut their risk of drinking and driving by 70%, are half as likely to speed and 30% less likely to use a cellphone. And kids who don't have access to their "own" car — they have to ask for the keys — are half as likely to get into a crash.

Parents really DO matter!

Class Dismissed: Should we Eliminate the Senior Year?

The senior year of high school. Cruise-time for some.  For others it offers an opportunity for them to take college level courses for credit before entering college, with their high school subsidizing or paying for those credits.  For many others, it represents a period of time of treading water.  They have applied to college, and some even have been accepted (if they choose early decision) and for those who plan to work after high school, ...

Parent Survey Results

Results of the Tri-town Coalition’s Parent Survey

The Tri-town Coalition to Reduce Underage Drinking sponsored a Parent Survey in December and January. Many thanks to all of those who responded and provided helpful feedback!   The purpose of this survey was to help the Tri-town coalition evaluate the effectiveness of its programs and to see how we can do a better job of reaching parents.  Here are some of the survey results.

Digital Nation

Did anyone watch the Frontline episode called Digital Nation?  If not, you should check it out online.  It's quite enlightening and shows how wired our kids really are.  Certainly not all kids, but a good majority of them.  It is changing everything, from the way they are taught in high school and college to interactions in the workplace in the future.  Even their hearing is being altered from being wired all ...

Help with Planning for College at E.O. Smith

Time wasters - all of them!

Facebook. Twitter, MySpace, Cell phones, Blogs, iParentnetwork....

Time wasters. Time thieves.  At least that is how the media has sometimes portrayed them.  Not real.  Online friends?  Get serious.  That's not really human contact.  Those are trivial connections that take up time that we could be spent with our real friends, right?  Those using social media, such as iParentnetwork, are the lonely folks, the isolated.  Social media must adds to that sense of isolation.

Nope.

The Generation Gap of THIS Century

I read an article the other day that I just had to share.  A little toddler picked up a book and said "Daddy's book!"  How cute, you may think. Except the item in that toddler's hand was a Kindle, an e-book, not a book at all, in the traditional sense.

It was at that moment that I realized that each generation will have their own little generation gap to deal with and it all ...

Why Facebook may be unwittingly exposing your kid to underage drinking

Facebook wasn't even around five years ago and now it is may be a central part of your teen's social activity. With over 250 million users, it's doubtful that Facebook hasn't impacted your teen's life in some way, even if they are not registered users of the social networking site.

Roughly one third of active users are under the age of 21. One of the revenue streams for Facebook is through advertising. Facebook pages, applications, ...

This should be the online mantra for our kids

The FCC recently published guidelines for social networking safety for tweens and teens.  There are some really good tips in here that every parent should read.  We all know that we have to teach our kids to look both ways before crossing the street.  That's a no-brainer.  What is less clear is how to guide them through this new terrain - the world of social networking.

If You Think Sexting Is Fun

The following is an article that I came across on a blog in the Hartford Courant.  It reports the second known "sexting" related suicide to take place in the country.

This is a dangerous practice that is engaged in by naive teens, and the consequences can be significant and far-reaching.  I know of at least one local student who was involved in a similar incident and ultimately withdrew from school.  Parents need to know about ...

Ungrateful Teenager In My House

This is an interesting article in today's Courant about parents using Facebook to vent about their teens: http://www.courant.com/features/hc-hartfordfacebook1118.artnov18,0,2160735.story.

I think it raises a number of interesting points: should social networking be used in this way, are teens today different, or is this just part of a developmental phase, and how can parents instill the kinds of values in their children that they would like to see them carry into adulthood?

I don't know what the ...

How to post a job for an after school babysitting job

An anonymous question just came in.  The writer was wondering where on the site was an appropriate place to post an after school job for a high school student.

What kinds of questions parents are asking when they drop their child off at a friend's house

Fresh Facts: Binge Drinking - One more thing to worry about during flu season!

Binge drinking poses one more health hazard during flu season because it undermines the body's immune system and makes a person more prone to infection for the 24 hours after binge drinking.

With flu season approaching, this is just one more thing to be aware of.  And to further complicate this particular flu season is the onset of the H1N1 virus.

Students learn about underage drinking by studying the science behind it

Students in Boston, using a pilot program developed by the National Institutes for Health in conjunction with scientists from Boston University, study the effects that drinking have on mice.  Studying this in this way seems to have had an impact on the way teens look at alcohol consumption.  Watch the video to learn more about this.

Parents Busted on Facebook for Hosting Teen Drinking Party

Today's Hartord Courant reported from Glastonbury on how an "Charges filed In Facebook Underage Drinking Photos."

Of Substance

As I was watching the Super Bowl, and realized that this is a great opportunity to talk about the impact that advertising has on our attitudes towards alcohol use. We all know that the Super Bowl provides one of the greatest television advertising opportunities of the year, and many of us look forward to the latest Budweiser commercial (remember Spuds McKenzie and the singing frogs?). While I appreciate the entertainment value of those ads, I think we need to consider the impact that they have on the millions of youth who watch them along with us.

Parenting In A Connected World

Parents tell me they are so overwhelmed because kids seem to understand technology better than most adults do. Because they are so connected to each other today, it has become very difficult to effectively parent our kids. After all, when was the last time one of your kid's friends actually called your house to talk to your son or daughter and you got to answer the phone and actually hear who was calling? Most kids today have cell phones, email accounts, Facebook or My Space pages and a slew of other ways of connecting to one another in ways that basically shut parents out of the loop. Am I right? It's time we mount a challenge to that by getting smarter about how all this technology works! B As Cnnctd As Ur Kids R! I'll try to help you understand the power of what has become known as Web 2.0 and how to embrace it. It's not going away.

Weird but fun....

If you're looking for something different to do, my daughter and a friend trekked down to Middletown to see the "World's Largest Jack in the Box" -- it was truly an experience to remember.  This is probably best for the tween to teen age set only because of the contents inside Wild Bill's store, which you DEFINITELY must spend some time exploring.  I've never seen quite a collection like this.

Get involved in next year's Safe Grad!

Are you interested in re-thinking the way Safe Grad is organized and run?  In the past, there has been a great deal of focus on fundraising in order to support expensive prizes for the kids as a way of encouraging them to attend Safe Grad.

If you'd like to lend your creativity and ideas to the cause, please let us know as there are a few parents who would like to reformat this event with a greater emphasis on fun and camaraderie and less on prizes.

Brownstone Exploration and Discovery Park

Brownstone Exploration and Discovery Park is a great place to visit in Middletown.  It's a former quarry that they have converted to a natural water park.  For an admission of $26 you get to swim, go on the zip line, cliff jump, learn how to wake board and play on a number of inflatables in the water.  You can bring a picnic and it's a great day of fun.  Because the water is 100 feet deep, everyone is required to wear life preservers at all times, so even young kids can participate in some things.  For younger kids, you can pay $18 for just swimming and the inflatables.

This makes it a great park for families that have young kids as well as older ones. There is something for everyone.  My personal favorite was the wake boarding.

Teen Driving Rules

This came home from EO Smith today and I wanted to share it.

DMV each year receives questions regarding how the teen driving curfew affects students participating in high school proms and school-sponsored events afterward. This exception does not apply to passenger restrictions. All laws regarding passenger restrictions remain in effect for 16 and 17-year-old drivers.

These school-related activities usually end during the time when there is a curfew, which is from of 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., for 16 and 17 year-old drivers. (The curfew does not apply to drivers over 18 years-old.) DMV below attempts to give general guidance on how the curfew works when school-sponsored activities are involved. However, each case is decided on the facts of the circumstances.

State law gives an exception for “school or religious activities” in Public Act 05-54. However, these are not defined in the statute and to date, no cases have come before the courts for interpretation of this language. The language is quite broad, and DMV believes that the exception was intended to cover school-sponsored or sanctioned activities, whether on school grounds or off. The exception would allow driving after curfew to or from an activity such as a prom or away game, provided that there is no intervening activity to which the student is driving.

For example, a student would not be able to drive from the prom to a friend’s house, attend a post-prom party at the friend’s house, and then drive home. It is reasonable to expect that a student would not be driving home from a prom at 2:00 a.m. when the prom ended at 11:00 p.m., and is in the same town. If the student, however, was traveling to a school-sponsored post-prom party, then travel to the event from the prom and then from the event to home directly afterward would be allowed.

Many schools, though, hold proms and some post-prom parties in neighboring towns. The police departments in these towns may not know the out-of-town school’s prom schedule and school-sponsored post prom activities. To assist patrol officers in making a determination of whether an exception to curfew applies, the DMV suggests that the police departments in hosting towns be given advance notification of the prom itinerary by the sponsoring school district, and/or that students be provided with an official schedule of school-sponsored prom activities to carry in their vehicles.
