Strict Rules From Parents Lead to Safer Driving by Teens

http://tinyurl.com/yadsh5m
Two studies coming out in the journal Pediatrics Monday show that parents have a big impact on the safety of teen drivers.

Parents who are actively involved in setting rules and boundaries, and following up on those rules, lead to safer drivers. Teens who say their parents are actively involved cut their risk of drinking and driving by 70%, are half as likely to speed and 30% less likely to use a cellphone. And kids who don't have access to their "own" car — they have to ask for the keys — are half as likely to get into a crash.

Parents really DO matter!

Parent Orientation at High School

Attention all parents of 8th graders!  EO smith is planning to hold its important parent orientation for the parents of incoming freshman for next year on Thursday, March 25th at 6:30 PM in the EOS Auditorium.

At that time, you will be presented information on academics, extracurricular activities, and student life.  It will also be an opportunity for parents to ask questions.

Digital Nation

Did anyone watch the Frontline episode called Digital Nation?  If not, you should check it out online.  It's quite enlightening and shows how wired our kids really are.  Certainly not all kids, but a good majority of them.  It is changing everything, from the way they are taught in high school and college to interactions in the workplace in the future.  Even their hearing is being altered from being wired all ...

This should be the online mantra for our kids

The FCC recently published guidelines for social networking safety for tweens and teens.  There are some really good tips in here that every parent should read.  We all know that we have to teach our kids to look both ways before crossing the street.  That's a no-brainer.  What is less clear is how to guide them through this new terrain - the world of social networking.

The first concept you must get across to ...

Self-assessment

Self-Assessment 14.2: (Santrock, 2008, Life Span Development)

Think back to your adolescent years, especially when you were in high school. Rate each of the items for both your mother and your father on the following 5 point scale:
1 = Knows nothing
2 = Knows a little
3 = Knows many things
4 = Knows most things
5 = Knows everything
Write your ratings one the lines to the right side. Rate the "father ...

What kinds of questions parents are asking when they drop their child off at a friend's house

At recent fall events, members of iParentnetwork were out meeting and greeting members of each of the three communities.  We surveyed parents on a number of questions, one of which was this question: "What kinds of questions do you ask when you drop your child off at a friend's house?"

We were pleased to report that parents are asking questions and even more pleased at the variety of questions parents were posing.  We thought it ...

Help, My Son Is Smoking Pot!

We received the following anonymous question today: "Help!! When I got home from work I found my tween son smoking pot with one of his friends.  I talked to him about the dangers, and how it inhibits brain growth, the legal ramifications, etc., but I'm wondering if there's anyone else out there who's gone through this and has been successful at stopping it."

My guess is that many of you parents have dealt with something ...

Not all parental monitoring software is alike

Wow.  It seems as if not all parental monitoring software is alike.  Two of the leading brands -- brands rated as tops by trusted source C-net - have been found to be mining kids chats and posts for information so they can tailor their marketing better.

Personally, I'm in favor of open dns as a way to safely monitor our kid's activities online.  It not only gives you flexibility in monitoring your kids ...

How To Encourage More Positive Behavior in Your Children

Imagine that you did a “time study” on yourself as you relate to your child. What percent of the time are you focusing on that child’s positive traits and behaviors? What percent of the time are correcting, directing, criticizing and sometimes worse? The best self-report I have heard from parents is about 50% - 50%. The most common is 70 - 80% directing, correcting, etc. Think about how that might influence self-worth in kids.

I'm Just Sayin'....

It seems that our kids move more and more quickly from one slang phrase to another.  It's hard to keep up.  Between the instant message "speak" to inventive spellings used in text messages, it's hard to even understand them anymore.  Am I right?

Well, I'm here to help.  I have just learned that UCLA has published it's latest dictionary of slang called the UCLA Slang 6.  You can order it from them directly (sorry it's ...

What message does this send to our girls?????

Check this out. Ralph Lauren has been caught again.  What do these fashionistas think they are doing when they alter reality in this way?  This bears a conversation with all of our daughters about the lack of reality in magazines and in the media in general.  I was hoping that by now, as an adult, our society would have evolved enough to eliminate the portrayal of women this way....but I guess we haven't gotten there yet.

What do others tell their daughters?  I encourage you to share this article with them.  They need to know that most of what they see isn't real. And most importantly, that real beauty lies below the surface.

Anyone have ideas for lunches?

My daughter doesn't like sandwiches and she is a vegetarian.  Anyone have any interesting ideas for lunches I can send to school? I've run out of ideas....

Weird but fun....

If you're looking for something different to do, my daughter and a friend trekked down to Middletown to see the "World's Largest Jack in the Box" -- it was truly an experience to remember.  This is probably best for the tween to teen age set only because of the contents inside Wild Bill's store, which you DEFINITELY must spend some time exploring.  I've never seen quite a collection like this.

Brownstone Exploration and Discovery Park

Brownstone Exploration and Discovery Park is a great place to visit in Middletown.  It's a former quarry that they have converted to a natural water park.  For an admission of $26 you get to swim, go on the zip line, cliff jump, learn how to wake board and play on a number of inflatables in the water.  You can bring a picnic and it's a great day of fun.  Because the water is 100 feet deep, everyone is required to wear life preservers at all times, so even young kids can participate in some things.  For younger kids, you can pay $18 for just swimming and the inflatables.

This makes it a great park for families that have young kids as well as older ones. There is something for everyone.  My personal favorite was the wake boarding.
