FDA considering banning alcoholic beverages that have caffeine
In this article you will learn that there are new brands of alcoholic beverages that have added caffeine (I didn't know these even existed!). Apparently with the added caffeine, people seem more confident in their abilities while under the influence and may be participating in risky behaviors at a higher rate than they would had they had just a regular alcoholic beverage. These beverages are targeted at younger drinkers, particularly popular with college aged kids. Here's an opportunity to talk about this with your kids while they are still in your home about this new danger out there...

Why 21, Revisited
In June I wrote a blog about the controversy over the national drinking age of 21 and the move to reopen this discussion on college campuses. Over the weekend someone sent me this article, http://freshstory.org/blog/freshstory.php?p=103&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1#more103, which reminded me about 'why the stakes are so high around this issue.
The fact is that many teens who do drink tend to binge, and it's clear from this and other research that the consequences are significant. So ...
What kinds of questions parents are asking when they drop their child off at a friend's house
At recent fall events, members of iParentnetwork were out meeting and greeting members of each of the three communities. We surveyed parents on a number of questions, one of which was this question: "What kinds of questions do you ask when you drop your child off at a friend's house?"
We were pleased to report that parents are asking questions and even more pleased at the variety of questions parents were posing. We thought it ...
Underage Drinking In the News
The issue of underage drinking has been in the Connecticut news a lot during the last month with the suspension of football players and cheerleaders (later reduced) in East Haven and the release of 26 names of underage youth arrested at a party in Cheshire. In both of these cases the thing that struck me was the powerful community opposition that arose to the consequences that were imposed on the violators.
In East Haven 80 ...
Students learn about underage drinking by studying the science behind it
Students in Boston, using a pilot program developed by the National Institutes for Health in conjunction with scientists from Boston University, study the effects that drinking have on mice. Studying this in this way seems to have had an impact on the way teens look at alcohol consumption. Watch the video to learn more about this.
Why 21?
Last summer many of you may have heard about a movement on college campuses to examine lowering the minimum drinking age from the current 21. Called the “Amethyst Initiative” (named for the purple gemstone amethyst, which in Ancient Greece was widely believed to be an antidote to the negative effects of intoxication), this group consisted of chancellors and presidents of universities and colleges across the United States (www.amethystinitiative.org). The Amethyst Initiative called upon elected ...
It Takes A Village...
As a young boy growing up in Huntington, Long Island in the 50’s and early 60’s, I was guided and nurtured not only by my parents, but also by many of their friends in the neighborhood. My parents’ friends became my adoptive “aunts” and “uncles,” who all knew how I was doing in school, who came to all of my high school football games, and who were clearly invested in me as I developed from ...

Party 411
This is a group for parents of teenagers. If anyone hears about a big party in town that is happening, you can put a notice up here. Kids today are passing around invites on facebook and collecting huge numbers of kids to attend parties. This group will help us all be a little more aware of where our kids are going on a days when we know parties are happening. This will be especially helpful around the time of Spring Weekend at UConn.

The Teenage Brain - Who Knew?
I've just learned that the brain doesn't fully develop in kids until the 20s! This is HUGE as it can mean that if our kids get involved in drugs or alcohol in their teens, they could suffer permanent neurological damage to their brain!
Here's a great site that explains all the "normal" teenage behaviors and why they act the way they do and then it also gives examples so that you can identify when those behaviors might be cause for concern.

EO Smith Statistics
I ran across these statistics and I thought parents might like to know these. These were compiled by NECASA:
- 30% of EO Smith students had used in last month (2004 NECASA survey)
- 49% of EO Smith students felt that adult acceptance of underage drinking was a factor that contributed to drinking (Take It Back non-scientific survey)
- 20% of EO Smith students get alcohol from their parents with their permission and 21% get alcohol from their parents without their permission (NECASA)
- National research has shown that the following parent behavior helps prevent underage drinking:
- monitor and supervise consistently
- offer emotional support
- provide positive bonding
- communicate clear, positive expectations
